Is a Health Science Degree Good Enough to Get Into Herbology?

A health science degree helps you get a job in a health-related field. With a Bachelor of Science in this field, you can often work in clinical and non-clinical settings. Individuals often work as medical lab technologist and healthcare administrators. They spend the degree studying nutrition, medicine and health topics.

While this degree is a popular choice for working in the health field, it might not be enough for you to work as a herbologist. You can find a certificate or degree for herbology online or in person. With additional training, you can begin a rewarding career as an herbalist.

If you are interested in learning more information about how to become an herbalist, then be certain to provide yourself with all the available information that we have to offer on the subject.

Is a Health Science Degree Good Enough to Get Into Herbology?

If you want to become an herbologist, you have to have some type of medical degree in order to practice. If you just take a course on herbs, you are technically not allowed to practice. You can still brew your own teas and tinctures, but you cannot have patients. Because of this, many people choose to get some type of medical or health science degree. One common option is to study naturopathy.

One of the biggest reasons why you can’t just get a degree for herbology in order to practice is because there isn’t a standardized certification for it. While the American Herbalist Guild offers a list of different herbology schools, the states do not actually have a specific certification. For you to be a practicing herbalist or herbologist, you have to get another type of medical certification in order to practice.

Studying a Degree for Herbology

Once you do have a degree and certification in another field, you still have to learn about herbology. There are online schools that can help you begin this journey. Some programs offer in-person options and apprenticeships.

One of our favorite programs (that we liked enough to make an affiliate of this site) is the Herbal Academy. They offer a range of classes ranging from an introductory course to advanced levels. If you are a newbie to the field, their introductory course is a great option. For a briefer course, check out their program on Botany & Wildcrafting Course. This program helps you learn how to identify plants, create your own herbarium and discover how the plants around you create a unique ecosystem. If you need a degree for herbology to experiment with, it is a top option.
